Afro hairdressers: add hair consultation to your services

Your clients already ask you questions: why are my edges thinning, what should I use under my braids, how often should I wash my locs? Turning those answers into real hair consultation adds a dimension to your technical skills without changing jobs.

By Pascal Chaubo, founder of Ozentya (afro hair care since 2011) · updated

In short

Adding hair consultation in the salon means taking a few minutes to look at the hair and scalp, asking the client about her routine, then giving her a written routine adapted to her style and seeing her again to adjust. It showcases your expertise, helps clients between appointments and makes your product recommendations more accurate.

The Ozentya Method teaches a cosmetic approach to hair consultation. It is not a state diploma and does not replace a hairdressing qualification or the advice of a doctor or dermatologist. The course is taught in French.

Why consultation builds loyalty

A client who understands what to do between appointments comes back with hair in better condition, and she knows why she comes back to you. Consultation turns a one-off service into follow-up.

A quick assessment in the salon

At the wash basin or before installing a style, look at the scalp (clean, dry, irritated), the edges, breakage and the elasticity of a wet strand. Ask about the client's routine, styles and how often she wears them. Write everything on a form: that is what makes follow-up possible.

Topics that come up most

Protective styles: tension, weight, how long they stay in and take-down; see our protective styles guide and the one on traction alopecia. Care between appointments: wash frequency, moisture and night protection, ideally as a short written routine. Breakage and ends: help the client find the cause rather than adding more products.

Recommending products with method

A product recommended because it meets an identified need sells more easily and disappoints less. Explain why this product, how to use it and how long to use it before reviewing. If you resell Ozentya products, trade conditions are on ozentya.org.
