Postpartum hair loss in afro hair: what is normal and how to care for your hair

During pregnancy many women keep more hair than usual. After birth, that hair falls out over a few weeks, which can be frightening, especially when the hairline thins. Here is what happens and what you can do at home.

In short

Postpartum shedding usually starts two to four months after birth, often around the edges and temples, and settles within six to twelve months. It is linked to hormones returning to normal. A gentle, low-tension routine protects the hair you have while it settles; heavy loss beyond a year, patches or fatigue call for a blood test with your doctor.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor or dermatologist. Results vary from person to person.

Why hair falls out after pregnancy

High pregnancy hormones keep hair in its growth phase longer. After delivery they drop, many hairs enter the resting phase at the same time and fall out two to four months later. It is the shedding of hair that was 'kept', not a sign that your hair will not come back.

Edges and temples: the most visible area

Postpartum shedding is often most visible along the hairline. Avoid adding tension at that moment: no tight ponytails, edges brushed every day or heavy braids. See our edges and temples guide.

A gentle routine for new moms

Wash weekly with a gentle shampoo such as Nat'yrel Shampoo, condition every time, use a nourishing mask once a week and keep loose, low-tension styles. Short nights and stress play a part too: a ten-minute routine is easier to keep.

Breastfeeding: the products to wait for

Extrême Repouss scalp lotions must not be used during pregnancy; wait until you have finished breastfeeding. Gentle shampoos, conditioners and masks can be used.

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if shedding continues beyond a year, if you see bald patches, or if you feel very tired: iron deficiency and thyroid changes are common after pregnancy and are checked with a blood test.

Frequently asked questions

How long does postpartum hair loss last?

It usually starts two to four months after birth and settles within six to twelve months. If it lasts longer, talk to your doctor.

Can I use a scalp lotion while breastfeeding?

Not Extrême Repouss: wait until you have finished breastfeeding. Gentle cleansing and conditioning products can be used.

Will my edges come back after pregnancy?

Postpartum shedding is usually temporary. Avoid tension on the hairline while it settles, and see a doctor if nothing changes after a year.
