Protective styles: which to choose and how to care for them

Protective styles are a great ally for length retention on coily hair. Installed too tight or kept too long, they become one of the main causes of breakage and traction at the temples. Everything depends on the choice, the install and the care.

In short

A protective style tucks the ends away and limits manipulation to reduce breakage. To really protect, it must be light, installed without pulling on the roots, kept only a few weeks, and the scalp must still be washed and the lengths moisturised throughout.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

The main protective styles

Twists and cornrows on your own hair: easy to do and undo, ideal for a few days to two weeks. Low bun or loose pineapple: protects the ends day to day if it does not pull on the hairline. Braids with extensions: long-lasting but watch weight, root tension and duration, see braids, weaves and wigs. Wigs and weaves: the hair underneath must stay accessible for washing and moisture, no glue on the hairline.

Before the install

Wash, apply a mask, detangle carefully, moisturise and seal. Trim very damaged ends. Arrive with clean, soft hair and say clearly if it hurts: a style should never be painful.

While you wear it

Clean the scalp every one to two weeks with diluted shampoo applied between the rows, rinse thoroughly, dry well. Refresh the lengths with a light moisturising spray. At night, protect with a satin scarf or bonnet.

How long to keep it

Usually a few days to two weeks for twists on your own hair, and no more than six to eight weeks for braids with extensions. Then leave a few weeks' break before the next install.

Taking it down without breakage

This is the riskiest moment. Take your time, work in sections, apply conditioner or oil at the base of each braid, and remove shed hair with your fingers before using any comb. Then wash and apply a generous mask.

Frequently asked questions

Do protective styles make hair grow?

They do not make hair grow faster, but by limiting breakage they help you keep the length you grow.

My style hurts, what should I do?

Loosen or remove the braids that pull. Pain, bumps or crusts at the base are signs of traction not to ignore.

Can I use edge control every day?

In moderation, without brushing the hairline hard. Leave your edges natural several days a week.
