Self-assessment

Afro hair and scalp diagnosis: take stock in 5 questions

This five-question check helps you identify your texture, your porosity, the state of your scalp and the nature of your hair concerns. It is a cosmetic guide only.

In short

Before changing products, check five things: your texture (type 3 or 4A to 4C), your porosity, the thickness and density of your hair, the state of your scalp, and whether your hair breaks or sheds. Your answers point to the right routine; they do not replace an examination by a health professional.

This diagnosis is a cosmetic guide. If you have heavy shedding, patches, pain, redness or persistent itching, see a doctor or dermatologist.

1. What is your texture?

Look at a clean strand without product while it dries. Loose curls (type 3)? Tight coils or zigzags (types 4A to 4C)? Several textures depending on the area? Our kinky and coily hair guide explains how to care for each.

2. What is your porosity?

Does wet hair dry in under an hour and quickly feel rough again? Rather high porosity: rich products and sealing. Do products sit on the surface and does your hair take hours to dry? Rather low porosity: light products and gentle heat during masks.

3. Is your hair fine or thick, dense or sparse?

Roll a strand between your fingers and check the thickness of a ponytail. Fine or low-density hair needs a lighter routine without tension.

4. How is your scalp?

Tightness, itching, flakes, an oily scalp two days after washing, small bumps at the roots after a new style? Each sign calls for different gestures: gentle cleansing, less build-up, less tension.

5. Does your hair break or shed?

Collect a few lost hairs. A broken hair is short with no root. A shed hair is long, with a small white bulb at one end. Lots of short pieces: it is breakage, to work on with moisture. Lots of whole hairs and a widening part: see our hair loss guide and talk to a doctor.

What next?

Write down your answers, take starting photos and choose one routine to follow for three months. Changing products every week makes it impossible to know what works.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my hair porosity?

Watch the drying time and how your hair absorbs products. The glass-of-water test is popular but unreliable, because product residue skews the result.

Should I repeat the diagnosis?

Yes, every few months: the season, colouring, a pregnancy or a new routine can change what your hair needs.

Can an online diagnosis detect alopecia?

No. It can flag signs that justify a consultation, but only a doctor or dermatologist can diagnose alopecia.
