4C hair breakage: why your hair snaps and the routine to keep your length
'My hair does not grow' very often means 'my hair breaks as fast as it grows'. The good news: breakage is the hair problem you have the most control over.
In short
4C hair breaks easily because each tight bend is a weak point and natural oils travel down the strand slowly. Breakage is reduced with moisture, a weekly mask, gentle detangling on conditioned hair, protective styles and satin at night. Short broken pieces without a white bulb are breakage; long hairs with a bulb are shedding.
Breakage or shedding: the simple test
Collect the hairs left in your comb. Short pieces with no root are breakage. Long hairs with a small white bulb at one end are normal shedding. If you mostly see broken pieces, the routine below is for you; if you see lots of whole hairs and thinning areas, read our hair loss guide.
The main causes
Dryness, detangling on dry hair, fine-tooth combs, heat, bleach and relaxers, tight styles, cotton pillowcases and unprotected ends. Hair that feels rough and stiff after drying is asking for more moisture and sealing.
The 5-step anti-breakage routine
1. Wash gently once a week. 2. Condition every time with a slippery conditioner such as Castor & Jojoba Conditioner and detangle only then, with fingers or a wide-tooth comb, from ends to roots. 3. Deep mask weekly with Suprême Mask. 4. Moisturise with a leave-in cream and seal with an oil. 5. Protect: low-manipulation styles, satin bonnet or pillowcase at night, trim split ends.

Shrinkage hides length on 4C hair. Stretch one twist on the same day each month and photograph it next to a ruler: you will see whether you retain length.
