Protecting afro hair from sun, cold, sea water, chlorine and pollution

Hair does not repair itself like skin: every aggression adds up along the length. Coily hair, drier and fragile at each curve, is especially sensitive to sun, cold wind, salt and chlorine. A few simple reflexes limit the damage.

In short

To protect your hair from the elements, limit exposure (protective style, scarf, satin-lined hat), keep the lengths moisturised and sealed, and rinse with fresh water after the sea or the pool before applying conditioner. Keep the scalp clean so it copes with sweat and pollution.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

Sun

UV rays can weaken the fibre, dull colour and dry the ends. In summer or in the tropics, cover your hair at the hottest hours, keep the lengths moisturised and sealed with an oil, and choose styles that tuck the ends away. Do not forget your part and scalp.

Cold, wind and indoor heating

Dry cold outside and heated air inside dry the hair, and wool scarves rub on the nape. Wear a satin-lined hat or a satin scarf under your hat, moisturise more often and seal with a cream or oil.

Sea and swimming pool

Salt and chlorine dry hair out. Before swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and apply conditioner or oil: hair already full of water absorbs less salt or chlorinated water. A swim cap helps, especially with braids. Afterwards, rinse well, wash with a gentle shampoo and apply a mask.

Sweat and the gym

Sweat drying on the scalp can make it uncomfortable. After exercise, a water rinse or light scalp cleanse is enough; avoid tying the same tight ponytail in the same place every time. A soft or satin headband protects the hairline.

Pollution

Fine particles settle on the scalp and hair. In the city, regular well-rinsed washes and a protective style or scarf on windy days keep hair and scalp more comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special hair sunscreen?

It can help, but the simplest protection is physical: hat, scarf, protective style, and well-moisturised, sealed lengths.

How do I protect braids at the pool?

Wet them with fresh water first, wear a swim cap, then rinse thoroughly and clean the scalp between the rows afterwards.

Why does my hair break more in winter?

Cold air and heating dry the fibre, and collars and scarves rub the ends. Moisturise more often and protect the nape with satin.
