Drying coily hair without damage: air-drying, diffuser and heatless stretching

Drying is an often neglected step. Rubbing with a terry towel, sleeping on wet hair or using a hot blow-dryer every week weakens the coily fibre. Here are the methods that protect your length.

In short

To dry coily hair without damage: squeeze out water with a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt, air-dry in a stretched style (twists, braids, bantu knots), or use a diffuser on lukewarm. If you blow-dry, always apply a heat protectant and keep the temperature moderate.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

Squeeze, do not rub

Swap the terry towel, which catches curls, for a microfibre towel or an old cotton T-shirt. Press the hair section by section, without rubbing or wrapping it tightly for hours.

Air-drying, stretched

The gentlest method. To limit shrinkage and knots, dry in a stretched style: twists or braids on damp moisturised hair dry in a few hours and give a twist-out or braid-out; bantu knots coil sections on themselves; banding stretches strands with soft, metal-free elastics.

The diffuser

It spreads the airflow and respects curls better. Use lukewarm and low speed, keep the diffuser near the roots without rubbing, and stop when hair is about 80% dry.

Blow-drying, flat irons and heat

Repeated heat can permanently alter the curl pattern (heat damage). If you blow-dry: detangled, almost dry hair, heat protectant on all lengths, moderate temperature, one pass per section, and no more than once every few weeks. Our Reconstructing Serum is formulated to protect the lengths from heat.

Do not sleep with wet hair

Damp hair under a bonnet all night dries badly, which can make the scalp uncomfortable and locs smell. Wash early enough for everything to dry, especially locs and thick braids.

Frequently asked questions

Does air-drying damage hair?

No, it is the gentlest method, as long as the scalp and locs dry completely during the day.

Can heat-damaged curls come back?

Products can improve their look, but curls truly altered by heat usually do not come back: they are trimmed away over time.

How do I dry locs?

Squeeze each loc in a microfibre towel, air-dry or use a lukewarm diffuser, and make sure they are dry to the core before night.
