Expert guide · Ozentya since 2011
Shampoo is the first step of any routine and often the one we pick fastest. On naturally dry coily hair, a harsh shampoo can undo the rest of your routine. Here is how to read a label and choose well.

In short
A good shampoo for afro hair cleans the scalp without drying the lengths. Choose first by scalp (normal, oily, dry, dandruff), then by hair: a gentle cleanser for everyday washes, a clarifying shampoo from time to time to remove build-up, and a specific shampoo for dandruff or locs.
This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.
Shampoo removes sebum, sweat, pollution and product residue from the scalp. Apply it mainly at the roots, massage with your fingertips and let the lather run over the lengths when you rinse: that is enough to clean them without stripping them.
Gentle shampoo, often sulfate-free, for weekly washes. Clarifying shampoo, about once a month, to remove butters, oils, gels and edge control, always followed by a mask. Anti-dandruff shampoo for a flaking scalp, used for a few weeks. Specific shampoos for locs (residue-free rinse), beards and children.
Sulfates are effective cleansers but can feel drying on very dry hair. A sulfate-free shampoo is often more comfortable for regular washes, while a stronger cleanser still has its place to clarify. Our Nat'yrel Shampoo is formulated without sulfates, petrolatum or silicones.
Oily scalp: wash more often with a gentle shampoo and rinse well. Dry or tight scalp: gentle shampoo, lukewarm water, not too many washes. Dandruff: an anti-dandruff shampoo for a few weeks. Itching, patches or redness that persist: see a health professional. Read our dry, itchy scalp guide.
Wet thoroughly, work in 4 to 6 sections if your hair is long or thick, apply shampoo diluted with a little water to the scalp, massage without rubbing the lengths, rinse for a long time. Follow with conditioner or a mask: that is the step that really detangles.

A gentle, preferably sulfate-free shampoo applied to the scalp only, followed by conditioner or a mask. Avoid very hot water.
Only if your hair is heavily loaded with product or after a long time without washing. Otherwise one well-massaged shampoo is enough.
A shampoo stays on for a few minutes: its job is to keep the scalp clean and comfortable. Growth depends mainly on genetics, general health and length retention.
