Kinky and coily hair care: a simple routine that keeps natural hair soft and strong

Type 4 hair is the most fragile hair type: each bend of the coil is a weak point. The aim of a routine is not to add products, but to keep moisture in and friction out.

In short

Kinky and coily hair needs moisture, gentle handling and protection. A weekly routine of gentle shampoo, conditioner, deep mask, a water-based leave-in sealed with an oil, and low-tension styles is enough for most people.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor or dermatologist. Results vary from person to person.

1. Wash the scalp, not the lengths

Once a week, apply a gentle shampoo to the scalp and let the foam rinse through the lengths. Detangle only with conditioner on, with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, from the ends up.

2. Deep mask every week

Leave a nourishing mask such as the Masque Suprême for 15 to 30 minutes under a cap. It is the step that makes the biggest difference to softness and breakage.

3. Moisturise and seal (LOC / LCO)

On damp hair, apply a leave-in or cream, then seal with an oil. Refresh mid-week with a little water and cream rather than piling on product.

4. Protect at night and in your styles

Sleep on satin or in a satin bonnet. Choose protective styles that do not pull at the edges and take breaks between installs.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash 4C hair?

Usually once a week, sometimes every ten days. A clean scalp is part of a healthy routine.

Why does my natural hair feel dry an hour after moisturising?

Moisture escapes when it is not sealed. Apply your cream on damp hair, then seal with an oil.
