How to detangle 4C and coily hair without breakage, step by step

Detangling is when we lose the most length, often without noticing. Coily hair wraps around itself and knots easily; rushed detangling snaps it. With the right method it becomes faster and much less painful.

In short

To detangle coily hair without breakage: work on wet hair coated in conditioner or mask, divide into sections, start with your fingers, then use a wide-tooth comb from the ends up to the roots. Never on dry hair, never by pulling.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

The five steps

1. Wet and coat: hair damp, conditioner or detangling mask applied generously until strands glide through your fingers. 2. Section: four to eight sections held with clips or loose twists. 3. Fingers first: gently open knots and remove shed hair. 4. Wide-tooth comb: start at the ends and work up, holding the section so you do not pull the scalp. 5. Secure: braid or twist each finished section so it does not tangle again while rinsing.

Mistakes that cause breakage

Detangling dry hair, using a fine brush on coily hair, combing from roots to ends, working the whole head at once, rushing. If knots always form at the ends, a trim can help: see split ends and fairy knots.

Shed hair or breakage?

Shed hairs fall naturally and stay trapped in the curls: they are long, sometimes with a small white bulb at one end. Short pieces without a bulb are breakage. Our 4C breakage guide helps you tell the difference.

Between wash days

Avoid fully detangling dry hair again. Refresh with a spray or water and loosen knots with your fingers. Stretched styles such as twists or braids limit everyday tangles.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I detangle?

A full detangle on wash day is usually enough. Daily manipulation encourages breakage.

Comb, brush or fingers?

Fingers first, then a wide-tooth comb. A soft detangling brush can work on wet, conditioned hair if used gently.

Why do I lose so much hair when detangling?

Part of it is hair shed over the previous days and trapped in the curls. If you lose much more than about 100 hairs a day on average, or see patches, talk to a doctor.
