Protein and moisture balance: what your natural hair really needs

Your favourite mask stopped working? Your hair feels rough although you use more and more products? It is often a question of balance between moisture and protein, two complementary needs of the hair.

By Pascal Chaubo, founder of Ozentya (afro hair care since 2011) · updated

In short

Hair needs both moisture (water, hydrating products) to stay soft and protein to keep its strength. Too much moisture without protein: soft, overly stretchy hair that does not hold curls. Too much protein: stiff, rough, brittle hair. Rebalance by alternating products based on what you observe.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

Why both matter

Hair is mainly made of keratin, a protein. Protein products (hydrolysed keratin, plant proteins) leave a coating that helps damaged hair hold up. Moisture brings the softness and elasticity that prevent breakage. Healthy hair needs both.

Spotting an imbalance

Do the stretch test on a wet strand. Lacking protein: it stretches a lot then snaps or does not return, curls are limp, hair feels gummy when wet, common after relaxers or colour. Protein overload: it barely stretches and snaps, feels stiff, rough, straw-like. Lacking moisture: dry, dull, tangles and breaks when detangling.

Adjusting your routine

Lacking protein: a protein treatment every two to four weeks, always followed by a moisturising product. Protein overload: pause protein products and use moisturising masks every wash for a few weeks. Lacking moisture: review washing, mask, the LOC or LCO method and night protection.

Reading labels

Proteins often appear as hydrolysed keratin, wheat, soy, rice or silk protein, collagen. Common hydrating ingredients are water first in the list, glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol. Our Curl Defining Gel combines aloe vera and keratin.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my hair needs protein?

A wet strand that stretches a lot without returning, and limp curls, are common signs. Relaxed or coloured hair often needs it.

Can I use protein every wash?

For most hair, that is too much. Once every two to four weeks is enough, with a moisturiser after.

How do I fix protein overload?

Stop protein products, use a gentle shampoo, then moisturising masks every wash for a few weeks.
