Hair loss guide · Ozentya, since 2011
Edges have become a real style statement: slicked, sculpted, laid. They are also the most fragile part of afro hair. When the temples thin, it is tempting to hide them under a wig or a tight headband, which often makes things worse. This guide offers a gentle, regular routine for your hairline.
In short
The temples and front hairline have the finest hair on the head: they are the first to give way to tension, daily gel, brushing and friction. To protect them, remove the tension, leave your edges natural, look after the scalp with regular massage and a scalp lotion, and track changes with photos for at least three months.
This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor or dermatologist. Results vary from person to person.
Hairline hair is finer and less dense. Repeated tension (pulled-back styles, wigs, headbands), gel and brushing every day, pillow friction, postpartum shedding or some medical causes can all play a part. The most frequent is traction alopecia.
Before adding a product, remove what weakens. Keep gel and brush for special occasions and leave the hairline free on other days. No braids on the fine hairs of the temples, no ponytail pulled back, no tight headband or wig cap. Use a satin pillowcase and bonnet at night, and a satin scarf rather than cotton.
Consistency matters far more than the amount of product. Cleanse with a gentle shampoo that rinses well, without leaving gel residue on the hairline. Massage with your fingertips in small circles, without rubbing or pulling, for two to three minutes several times a week. Apply a few drops of scalp lotion directly on the temples and hairline while massaging; for fine hair, choose a light formula such as Extrême Repouss Fine Hair. Finish with a light cream on the edges and a satin scarf.
Hair grows about one centimetre (less than half an inch) a month. Take a photo of each temple on day one, then every month, in the same light and from the same angle. Allow at least three months of regular routine before judging. Results vary from person to person, and no cosmetic product can guarantee regrowth.
If the skin of the temples becomes smooth and shiny, if thinning continues after the tension has stopped, if it spreads towards the crown, or if it comes with itching, pain or patches, see a dermatologist.

When the loss is recent and linked to tension, removing it and looking after the scalp can help things improve. Long-standing loss can be permanent. A dermatologist can assess your case.
Allow at least three months of regular routine and compare your monthly photos. Results vary from person to person.
The gel itself is not the issue, but daily brushing, tension and build-up weaken the hairline. Use it occasionally and rinse well.
It is a popular tradition. An oil can soften the hair, but too much can clog the scalp. A light scalp lotion applied regularly is easier to fit into a routine.
