Split ends and fairy knots on afro hair: prevent them and trim them
The ends are the oldest part of the hair: on long hair, they have years of friction, washing and styling behind them. On coily hair, add fairy knots, the tiny tight knots curls form when they wrap around themselves.

In short
A split end cannot be repaired: no product permanently glues a split strand back together. You trim it, then prevent new ones by limiting friction, heat and rough detangling, moisturising and sealing the ends, and protecting them at night. A maintenance trim every 8 to 12 weeks is often enough.

Signs of damaged ends
Ends splitting in two or more, lighter or whitish ends, thin see-through ends, tiny ball-shaped knots, strands always tangling in the same spot, length that no longer progresses.
Fairy knots
They form when a curl wraps around itself, especially on very tight, dry hair. Pulling them damages the strand: cut just above the knot with sharp scissors. Stretched styles and detangling on conditioned hair limit them.
What damages the ends
Friction on clothes and cotton pillowcases, heat (flat iron, hot blow-dryer), dry detangling, elastics, dryness, colour and relaxers.
The maintenance trim
Every 8 to 12 weeks or so, remove one or two centimetres, or only the damaged ends. At home, the search and destroy method means inspecting stretched hair strand by strand and cutting only split ends and knots, with proper hair scissors: blunt kitchen scissors create new splits.
Everyday prevention
Moisturise and seal the ends, wear styles that tuck them away, sleep on satin, limit heat and always use a heat protectant. Our Reconstructing Serum is formulated to smooth the lengths and protect them from heat.

Can a product repair split ends?
Some products coat and smooth the ends temporarily, which makes them look better and limits further splitting, but only a trim removes a split end.
Does trimming make hair grow faster?
No, growth happens at the root. But trimming damaged ends stops them breaking higher up, so you keep more length.
Wet or dry trim for coily hair?
Coily hair is usually trimmed stretched and dry, to see the real length and avoid cutting too short because of shrinkage.
