How to become a hair care consultant specialised in afro hair
Hair consultation has become an activity in its own right, in salons, shops, at home or online. For afro, kinky and coily hair the demand is high: many people have piled up products without knowing what really suits their hair. Here is what the job looks like and how to prepare for it properly.
By Pascal Chaubo, founder of Ozentya (afro hair care since 2011) · updated
In short
A hair consultant helps people understand their hair and adopt a suitable care routine: she observes, asks about habits, identifies visible needs, sets a realistic cosmetic goal and suggests a routine with follow-up. She does not make medical diagnoses and refers clients to a doctor or dermatologist as soon as a sign goes beyond cosmetic care.
The Ozentya Method teaches a cosmetic approach to hair consultation. It is not a state diploma and does not replace a hairdressing qualification or the advice of a doctor or dermatologist. The course is taught in French.
What a hair consultant does day to day
She welcomes the client, looks at the hair and scalp, asks about routine, styles, products and lifestyle, then suggests a clear routine: wash frequency, treatments and habits to change. She then sees the client again to adjust. Follow-up matters as much as the first appointment.
The skills to master
Understanding hair: texture, porosity, elasticity, density and scalp condition; curl type helps but is not enough. Spotting damaging habits: repeated tension, heat, relaxers, rough detangling, washing too rarely or too often. Building a realistic routine that fits the client's time, budget and styles. Knowing your limits: patches, redness, pain or sudden heavy shedding are for a doctor.
Do you need a diploma?
In France, hair consultation without styling is not governed by a specific diploma. If you also want to style hair in a salon, hairdressing is a regulated trade requiring a qualification. Rules differ from country to country, so check those that apply where you work.
Where to work
Alongside hairdressing or beauty work, in a hair care shop, a beauty institute, at home or through online appointments. Some consultants also sell products; it is then all the more important to recommend with method rather than at random.
Training with the Ozentya Method
Pascal Chaubo's online course (in French) was designed for this job. The 5D method structures every consultation: Describe (observe the situation), Determine (identify visible needs), Detect (spot damaging habits), Define (a realistic cosmetic goal), Develop (a routine and follow-up). It provides ready-to-use tools: diagnosis form, client questionnaire, 10 sample routines and protocols, follow-up sheets, a pricing template, 20 WhatsApp messages and 30 Instagram content ideas.
Frequently asked questions
Is a hair consultant the same as a trichologist?
No. Hair consultation stays cosmetic. Scalp or hair loss problems with a medical cause are for a doctor or dermatologist.
Can I become a hair consultant without being a hairdresser?
In France, yes: consultation without styling does not require a specific diploma. Check the rules in your own country.
Is the Ozentya course suitable for beginners?
Yes, it starts from the basics of afro hair. Note that it is taught in French.
