Thinning locs at the roots: protect your locs for the long term

A thinning base is the weak point of mature locs. The earlier you see it, the easier it is to protect.

In short

Locs thin at the root mainly because of weight, retwists that are too tight or too frequent, dryness and build-up. Lightening long locs, spacing retwists, cleaning the scalp regularly and moisturising lightly protect the base. Locs that break off, or a scalp that thins between locs, call for a professional opinion.

Why locs thin at the base

Long, heavy locs pull on the root every day. Tight retwists and frequent palm rolling thin the base. Dry locs become brittle, and residue weakens the fibres.

What to change

Space retwists, ask for gentle tension, avoid heavy updos, consider trimming very long locs, wash with a residue-free locs shampoo and moisturise with a light locs spray.

Scalp care between locs

Massage the scalp with a few drops of Locks Oil and keep it clean. If the scalp itself thins between the locs, see a dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thin loc be repaired?

A loctician can often reinforce a weak loc or combine it with a neighbouring one. The cause (weight, tension) must be addressed too.
