How often should you wash afro and coily hair?

Washing too often dries coily hair; not washing enough clogs the scalp. The right rhythm depends on your scalp, your lifestyle and your current style.

In short

Most afro and coily hair does well with a wash once a week or every ten days. Wash more often if your scalp gets oily fast, itches, or if you work out a lot, and a little less if your hair is very dry. The right rhythm keeps the scalp clean and comfortable without drying the lengths.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist. Every head of hair is different and results vary from person to person.

The general rule of thumb

Once a week to once every ten days suits a lot of afro hair. Wash day is when you do the whole routine: shampoo, mask, detangling, moisture and styling.

Adjust to your situation

Oily scalp or sport: two washes a week with a gentle shampoo, or a scalp rinse between full washes. Very dry hair: every ten days, with a pre-poo and a generous mask. Locs: every 7 to 14 days with a residue-free shampoo and complete drying, see locs care. Braids, weaves, wigs: clean the scalp every one to two weeks with diluted shampoo between the rows. Children: often once a week or every ten days, with gentle products and patient detangling.

Is co-washing an alternative?

Co-washing means washing with a cleansing conditioner instead of shampoo. It can suit very dry hair between shampoos but does not clean the scalp as well, so keep a real shampoo regularly.

Signs your rhythm is wrong

Itching, odour, flakes or a scalp that gets oily fast: wash more often or rinse better. Rough hair that breaks and feels tight after every wash: space washes a little, choose a gentler shampoo, strengthen the mask. See choosing a shampoo.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash coily hair every day?

It is usually unnecessary and can dry it out. A water rinse or moisturising is enough on other days.

Does not washing make hair grow?

No. A clogged scalp does not help growth; what matters is limiting breakage on the lengths.

Should I wash my hair after swimming?

Yes, at least a thorough fresh-water rinse, ideally a gentle shampoo and conditioner to remove chlorine.
