Locs and dreadlocks care: clean roots, light moisture, no build-up

Locs are low-manipulation, not no-maintenance. Most problems (odour, build-up, thinning at the root) come from heavy products and locs that never fully dry.

In short

Healthy locs need a clean scalp, residue-free products, thorough drying and light moisture. Wash every one to two weeks with a clarifying locs shampoo, dry completely, mist the lengths with a light spray and oil the scalp sparingly.

This is cosmetic and hair-care advice. It does not replace the opinion of a doctor or dermatologist. Results vary from person to person.

Washing

Use a residue-free shampoo such as the Shampoing Expert Locks, massage the scalp, squeeze the foam through the locs and rinse thoroughly.

Drying

Squeeze out water with a microfibre towel, then dry completely in the air or under a hood dryer. Never tie up damp locs.

Moisture without build-up

Mist the lengths with a light spray like the Spray Locks and apply a few drops of Huile Locks to the scalp. Avoid waxes and heavy butters.

Roots and retwists

Retwisting too often or too tightly thins the base of the locs. Space out your retwists and keep tension light.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I wash my locs?

Every one to two weeks for most people, more often if you sweat a lot or have an oily scalp.

Why do my locs smell?

Usually because they did not dry completely after washing. Dry them fully every time.
