Dry, itchy scalp and flakes with afro hair: how to calm and clean your scalp

Many of us were told to wash afro hair as little as possible. The lengths do need gentleness, but the scalp is skin: it needs to be cleaned.

In short

With afro hair, itching and flakes most often come from build-up (oils, gels, butters), washing too rarely, dryness or dandruff. Washing the scalp every one to two weeks, rinsing well and using an anti-dandruff shampoo when flakes are oily and yellowish usually helps. Redness, pain, patches or hair loss call for a dermatologist.

Dry scalp, build-up or dandruff?

Small white, dry flakes and tightness: rather a dry scalp. Waxy residue at the roots after heavy products: build-up. Yellowish, oily flakes with itching: rather dandruff. Under braids and locs, sweat and residue add up quickly.

How often to wash

Every one to two weeks for most people, more often if you work out or have dandruff. Focus the shampoo on the scalp with your fingertips, not your nails, and rinse for longer than you think.

The right products

For dandruff, an anti-dandruff shampoo left on the scalp for a few minutes. For regular cleansing, a gentle shampoo such as Cactus Shampoo. Avoid putting heavy butters or greases directly on the scalp.

Under braids, wigs and locs

Clean the scalp between braids with diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle and dry it well. For locs, see our locs guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I oil my scalp when it itches?

Not always: if the itch comes from build-up or dandruff, more oil can make it worse. Clean first, then use light products.

When should I worry about an itchy scalp?

See a dermatologist if itching lasts despite regular washing, or comes with redness, pain, scabs, patches or hair loss.
