Starter locs care: the first months, step by step
The first months decide how your locs will look for years. The goal is simple: clean roots, gentle tension and products that rinse out.
In short
Starter locs need patience and light care: wash the scalp every one to two weeks once the locs hold, retwist every four to eight weeks without pulling tight, use light, residue-free products and protect them with satin at night. Heavy waxes and over-tight retwists are the main enemies of young locs.
Washing starter locs
Wait a few weeks after starting if your loctician advises it, then wash the scalp gently with a residue-free shampoo such as Shampoing Expert Locks. A stocking cap helps hold the coils while washing. Dry thoroughly to avoid odours.
Retwisting without damage
Retwisting too often or too tight thins the roots. Every four to eight weeks is common. Use a light gel such as Gel Locks rather than heavy wax.
Moisture between washes
A light mist such as Locks Spray and a few drops of Locks Oil on the scalp are enough. Avoid heavy butters that stay trapped inside the locs.
Protect the roots for the long term
